Squat and Deadlift

Learn the technique for the deadlift and squat in a private personal training studio in central Edinburgh.

The deadlift and the squat are the most important movements to learn for fitness and health. Some form of squat and deadlift is included in most fitness programs because everyone can benefit from them.

Whether you are a 21-year-old competitive athlete who wants to improve strength and power or an 85-year-old who wants to be able to sit down and stand up more easily, learning to squat and deadlift will improve your performance and life. However, they are movements that require good technique.

Poor technique will risk injury to your back and lead to short and long term pain. Correct technique will enable you to build muscle, strength and power without injury.

Book in for a squat and deadlift technique session and learn how to deadlift and squat safely so you can get all the benefits of these two brilliant exercises.

Benefits of deadlifts and squats:

  • Build muscle
  • Increase strength
  • Burn fat
  • Increase power and explosiveness
  • Improve mobility
  • Develop a foundation of strength and stability for other exercises

Once you have grasped the basic concepts of deadlifting and squatting you will be able to apply these principles to other movements such as pull-ups, chin-ups, overhead presses (shoulder presses), bent over rows, push-ups and the Olympic lifts. The benefits of learning to deadlift and squat go way beyond simply squatting and deadlifting.

The Session

The deadlift and squat technique session will guide you through the key principles required for both movements, thus giving you an understanding of what to do and why so you can perform them safely yourself. The session can be tailored for complete beginners and those with some or lots of experience.

You will be guided through a general warm up, a quick movement assessment and then taught how to deadlift and squat. Every session will teach the fundamentals, including:

  • How to brace and create stability through your entire system
  • How to set up: foot placement, grip, alignment etc.
  • The relationship between your hips, knees, ankles and feet and why this is so important
  • The importance of spinal position during the lifts and how to control this
  • How range of motion affects the muscles you are working and how to assess the range of motion that you can safely squat and deadlift through
  • How manipulating load, range of motion, bar position and grip width can make the exercises more or less challenging

After the fundamentals are covered, the rest of the session will be dictated by your current abilities. For some people, the entire session will focus on solidifying basic mechanics, others will be guided through advanced techniques and variations of the movements. This will depend on your ability.
